Changing existing IMAP settings instead of removing the account

If you prefer to not remove the account from your email program, you can edit the existing settings that you have. Below you will find guides to a number of popular email programs showing where to go to make the necessary changes.

Note: When you complete this procedure it is likely that all email in your account will be downloaded again to your computer or device.

Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird and go to Tools > Account Settings
  2. Find your account in the left panel and click on Server Settings
  3. Change Server Name to mail.runbox.com
  4. Click on Advanced… which is further down the screen
  5. Remove any setting in IMAP server directory
  6. Deselect Show only subscribed folders
  7. Remove any setting in Personal namespace
  8. Make sure Allow server to override these namespace is selected
  9. Click OK and then click OK again on the next page
  10. Restart Thunderbird

You may need to check that Thunderbird correctly selects the Sent, Trash, Spam and Drafts folders. If it does not you can select these manually by going to Tools > Account Settings and choosing Copies & Folders from the options on the left.

Apple Mail

  1. Open Apple Mail and go to Mail > Preferences and then select the Accounts tab
  2. Find your account in the left panel and make sure the Account Information tab opposite is highlighted
  3. Change the Incoming Mail Server setting to mail.runbox.com
    • If you find this option is grayed out and cannot be changed, please see the note at the end of these instructions
  4. Now click on the Advanced tab
  5. Remove any setting in IMAP Path Prefix
  6. The Port displayed should be 993
  7. Close the Preferences box and when prompted confirm you want to save the settings
  8. Restart Mail

Apple Mail – Selecting standard folders

If you find you can’t change the Incoming Mail Server setting, this might be because in newer versions of Apple Mail there is a setting in the Advanced tab called Automatically detect and maintain account settings. The setting is found on the Advanced tab. To turn it off, deselect the option, and then exist Preferences. Confirm you want to change the settings when exiting settings. Then follow steps 1 – 8 above.

Outlook 2016 for Windows

  1. Open Outlook and go to File > Account Settings
  2. Select your account and then click Change
  3. Change the Incoming Mail Server to mail.runbox.com
  4. Click on More Settings and choose the Advanced tab
  5. Remove any setting in Root Folder Path and click OK
  6. Click Next and the Test Account Settings window will open (a test email will be sent to your own account)
  7. Click Close and you will return to the previous window. Now click Finish.
  8. Finally click Close on the Account Settings window
  9. Restart Outlook

Outlook for Mac

  1. Open Outlook and go to Tools > Accounts
  2. Select your account from the left panel
  3. Change the Incoming Server to mail.runbox.com
  4. Click on Advanced…
  5. Remove any setting in IMAP Root Folder and click OK
  6. Now close the Account Settings window
  7. Restart Outlook

You may need to check that Outlook correctly selects the Sent, Trash, Spam and Drafts folders. If it does not, you can select these manually by going to Tools > Accounts and then clicking the Advanced… button. If you then choose the Folders tab you can manually set the folders on the server that Outlook should use.

Windows Live Mail

  1. Open Windows Live Mail and click on your Runbox account in the left column to highlight the name of the account
  2. Go to the Accounts tab and then click Properties
  3. A window will open with tabs, click on the Servers tab
  4. Change the Incoming Mail (IMAP) server to mail.runbox.com
  5. Click on the IMAP tab and if you see INBOX in Root folder path remove it and leave the box empty
  6. Click OK
  7. Restart Windows Live Mail

You may need to check that Windows Live Mail correctly selects the Sent, Trash, Spam and Drafts folders. If it does not, you can select these manually by going to IMAP tab mentioned in the instructions above and telling it the names of the folders it should use (which are Sent, Trash, Spam and Drafts).

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the settings for your Runbox account by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Runbox > Account (your email address)
  2. Change Incoming Mail Server to mail.runbox.com
  3. Tap Advanced at the bottom of the screen
  4. Make sure Use SSL is ON (SSL = encryption)
  5. Where you see IMAP Path Prefix please remove INBOX if it appears there
  6. Tap Account at the top of the screen to go back, and then tap Done. Your phone/tablet will now verify the new settings
