There could be times when you want to save individual messages from your account as a single file. This might be to send to someone else in the original format, move the message from one email program to another or it might be for troubleshooting purposes.

The .eml format is a standard format for saving individual email messages. It is basically a text file with the full contents of original message source including the message headers.

Most popular email programs offer a way to do this.

Note: Outlook for Windows doesn’t offer this format.

  2. Go to File (or Menu icon) > Save as > File (this gives you the full content of the message including the message headers).
  3. Enter a name or leave the default option in place.
  4. Click Save and your message will be saved in a file with a .eml extension.
